Four Reasons to Add Art to Your Walls

Many people feel this way about art: Art is a luxury. We don't need art on the walls—that's for the wealthy. I don't buy art because I can't afford it. Do you agree? I don't. Most of my life, and in all of the different places I have lived, there has been something on the walls. Likely it was my mom's doing, because she appreciated art, but there are plenty of reasons why it's a good idea to put something you enjoy on the wall. (and you don't need to be a millionaire to do so)

Here are four reasons why it's a good idea to add art to your walls

It makes you feel something. Art makes you happy, or relaxed, or nostalgic. Regardless of your preference, art can create a mood and help you spread that energy in your space. For instance, if you want your home to be a place of comfort, the art on the walls can work with your furniture, lighting and choice of colors to make your space a cozy retreat.

Or if you want to create a space in your home that is a fun gathering place, the art can liven up the room with energizing colors or as a conversation starter.

It's about you. Art is an easy way to incorporate your personal style into a space. Whatever you choose to display in your home says something about you. When you choose art that "speaks" to you it's an easy way to say "hey, this is me and this is my place". This is especially helpful for those of us who live in rentals. We can't paint the walls, or make any permanent changes, but we can hang something awesome on the wall and make the place ours.

You don’t like blank walls. It's overly-simplistic but art is one way to make your space feel finished and grown up, instead of like there's something missing. Staring at empty walls (or worse, the TV) when you come home at the end of the day isn't as enriching. If there's something to contemplate on the wall you can be transported to a different place or time.

It's no longer expensive. It used to be that if you wanted art for your walls you had to spend a lot of money. Original art is not cheap and if you can afford it by all means, go for it. Purchasing an original is totally worth it, but if it's not in your budget you can still purchase something good without going broke. If you need ideas go online. Pinterest has lots of low-cost DIY projects you can try and places where you can shop. Not sure what to get? Check out my free Guide to Choosing the Perfect Photo for Your Home for tips!
